Stachys aleurites

Stachys aleurites Boiss. & Heldr. Some Observational Notes * PDF of this blog with a gallery of photos showing characteristics : archive.org or academia.edu All Species Accounts Location Stachys aleurites is found within Antalya city and close by. As you progress away from the city, in its wooded edges Stachys bombycina becomes more common, and also at times plants of intermediate appearance between the two. Records quoted A have it appearing to about 20 km from central Atatürk Park, with additional records at 50 km NE and a 1950 record from Mersin, together reaching an altitude of 1275 m. Habitat It grows on the surfaces of natural calcareous rocks, on sloping faces and vertical sides, both exposed to the sun and in shade that receives little or no direct sunlight. As a large plant with a substantial base, it tends to grow from the rock cracks and holes rather than actually on the surfaces. It grows at the top of the sea cliffs but doesn't seem to grow down its s...

Eleocharis divaricata

Eleocharis divaricata Keskin Some Observational Notes * PDF of this blog with a gallery of photos showing characteristics : archive.org or academia.edu All Species Accounts Location Eleocharis divaricata is located in the western part of Antalya city on the Boğa Çayı in the natural seasonal part of the waterway, immediately north of the Boğa Çayı Park - that is, north of the wall that was built in 2019 across the Çayı (just north of the major roadway) to create an artificial reservoir of deep water to its south for the Park (see satellite photos at end). The species is not known from any other location. Range Currently The plant's presence stretches about 800 metres northward from that wall, along the east side of the river, beyond which I didn't spot any examples when I last looked, though there may be some. The west side I explored on 2025-01-08 and did not spot any but should be investigated again. River Flow The river is generally low much of the year, but it s...

Stachys buttleri

Stachys buttleri R.R.Mill Some Observational Notes * PDF of this blog with a gallery of photos showing characteristics : archive.org or academia.edu All Species Accounts Location Stachys buttleri can be found upon a high-standing rocky face at the Upper Düden Waterfall (Yakarı Düden Şelalesi), 36.963594,30.726496, whose upper part reaches an altitude 90 m, and which I visited on 2024-10-10. It grows specifically on the western face, growing at ground level to a considerable distance up, with a vertical shaft in close proximity on the same face which holds a bat colony. As a popular site, there are many tourists there. There are other rocky walls around, but it doesn't appear to grow on them - the north face is soaked in the waterfall, and as a fragile plant persisting on dryish rocks and experiencing no competition, the north face would not be a place to expect it, whilst the east side might perhaps get the occasional plant, however none appeared present there. If there ...

Echinops antalyensis

Echinops antalyensis Some Observational Notes * PDF of this blog with a gallery of photos showing characteristics : archive.org or academia.edu All Species Accounts Location Echinops antalyensis ("Antalya Topuzu" in Turkish) grows 0 to 8 kms from the coast of Antalya city, and perhaps further inland. Coastally, it stretches 13 km from the western part of the rocky "Beach Park" to approaching the lower Düden waterfall. Beyond that, there appear to be strange forms growing in the sands from Lara to Side that suggest features of both antalyensis and spinosissimus, which deserve study. Away from the coast, it is extremely common 5.2 km inland (c. 170 m altitude) in the Yavuz Selim Mh. area and some places in-between, 8 km inland (220 m altitude) NE of Fatih (up to 36.9520975,30.6521346), and can be found 2.2 km inland at several spots SE of the airport (to 45 m altitude), including the large rock area north of Yamansaz. Given the way the city has grown over ...
